Historical memory in Russia

About this course

The course considers how the Russian Empire, Soviet period, the Great Patriotic War and the post-Soviet transition have been remembered and reinterpreted. It examines state-sponsored memory projects, monuments, historical sites, museums and textbooks, alongside the use of history in political decision-making. Teaching combines lectures, group discussions and case-study analysis. Participants also consider how dissidents, opposition movements and marginalised groups challenge official accounts of the past, and how different interpretations influence Russia’s political culture and international image.
