History in focus: Science in the Islamic Golden Age

About this course

The course surveys scientific advances made during the Islamic Golden Age and their influence beyond the Islamic world. Topics include chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, optics and engineering, alongside the scholars associated with these developments and their lasting impact on Europe. Teaching combines lectures, presentation slides, audio-visual material, breakout sessions, and group and whole-class discussion.

Is this course right for you?

This improver-level course is intended for learners with prior knowledge of the history of Islam and the medieval Islamic world. Participants should already understand the birth, expansion and decline of Islam and the development of the Islamic Golden Age. Teaching includes invited contributions to group and class discussion, with written and verbal instruction in English.
