About this course

The course covers how to read a bought garment pattern, including its markings and terminology, then prepare, mark and cut fabric pieces. Participants follow the construction of a top, skirt, dress or pair of trousers, making a practice garment and adjusting it where needed to improve the fit. Tutor guidance supports learners through the stages of assembly, after which they can recreate the garment in a fabric of their choice.

What you'll learn

  • Interpret the markings and terminology used on a bought garment pattern
  • Lay out, mark and cut fabric accurately for garment construction
  • Complete different types of stitching for assembling garment pieces
  • Adjust a practice garment to improve its fit
  • Apply the construction process to recreate a garment in a chosen fabric
