How to write a novel

About this course

The course introduces working methods for developing a long-form fiction project, with sessions focused on concept, characterisation, point of view, setting, narrative drive and the writing life. Teaching combines themed instruction with writing exercises and workshop discussion, allowing learners to explore ideas and share work for feedback. Topics also include plot, structure and the role of archetypes in storytelling. Work continues outside class through homework and additional challenges, including drafting an opening for a novel.
