Illustrating narratives

About this course

The course explores how visual choices shape a narrative across sequential images. Learners examine framing, perspective, the Rule of Thirds, thumbnail planning, pacing, variation, text, colour and scale. They also receive an introduction to Photoshop for image editing and InDesign for adding text. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, and group discussion. Activities include analysing narrative key frames and developing storyboard responses to a brief, with reflection on individual work forming part of the learning process.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate illustration learners with experience in visual communication. Prior storyboarding experience is not required, but basic illustration knowledge and skills are desirable. Teaching includes practical work, individual and group tutoring, and group discussion. English-language competency is needed to follow instructions and participate in discussions.

Before you go

• Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
• Learners are advised to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook and an A3 folder and/or USB drive for transporting work.
• Any additional materials needed will be discussed during the course.
• Additional or extension activities may be set for completion outside class.
