About this course

The course combines off-site drawing visits with studio sessions using observations and reference images of people and places. Teaching includes presentations, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, and discussions. Participants explore drawing people in dynamic poses, representing building interiors and exteriors, applying basic perspective, and recording ideas through experimental exercises. Work develops across wet and dry media, including collage, with observational sketches transformed into illustrations that combine figures and settings. The course also considers how location drawings and reference material can inform book ideas, portfolio pieces and art prints.

What you'll learn

  • Sketch people from life and reference images in a range of dynamic poses.
  • Apply observational drawing methods and basic perspective to buildings and locations.
  • Experiment with wet and dry media, including collage.
  • Combine people and places in illustrated scenes that convey a sense of space.
  • Develop location sketches and reference material into illustration ideas.
