Influential Women of the Islamic Empires

About this course

The course traces the emergence and expansion of Islam before examining the major empires and dynasties that followed, from Cordoba to Samarkand. It focuses on 15 women who shaped these societies as rulers, scientists, artists, saints, philanthropists and merchants, considering both their achievements and their lasting influence. Teaching combines lectures, presentation slides, audio-visual material, breakout sessions and group or whole-class discussion. The course also considers the decline of the last Islamic empires and the ways these women’s legacies extended into the modern Islamic world.
