About this course

Participants investigate avant-garde garment design by developing abstract visual research from sources including historical dress, architecture, imagery and personal references. They translate this research into 2D and 3D collages, experimental textile manipulation and creative toile samples. Working directly on a dress stand, the course examines silhouette, proportion, volume and scale through draping and manipulation. Learners document the process in physical and digital portfolios before resolving their ideas into a toile that combines experimental garment design with technical pattern cutting.

What you'll learn

  • Develop visual research using collected imagery and creative annotation
  • Experiment with 3D textile manipulation and toile sampling
  • Explore silhouette, proportion, volume and scale through draping on a dress stand
  • Translate abstract research into experimental garment designs
  • Apply technical pattern-cutting methods to produce a resolved toile
  • Document design development in physical and digital portfolios
