About this course
The course develops throwing skills through demonstrations, discussion, visual presentations and individual as well as group guidance. Participants work with clay preparation, shape-forming and wheel techniques to make bowls, vases, mugs, jugs and lidded pots, while also exploring experimental throwing and assembling. The teaching also addresses firing and introduces information about modern makers, galleries and exhibitions. Learners are encouraged to review their methods and progress through self-reflection and group discussion.

Is this course right for you?
The course is aimed at intermediate and advanced learners who already have some experience of throwing and want to develop their technique. Participation includes following demonstrations and written or verbal instructions, reviewing one’s own work, and contributing to group discussions.
- Newer throwers are directed towards a separate refresher course
- Learners should be able to follow basic measurements and calculations
- The course includes both individual and group teaching
Before you go
- Closed footwear is required; sandals and flip-flops are not permitted.
- Clothing may get messy, although aprons are provided.
- The potter’s wheel motors may pose a serious risk to people with pacemakers or internal defibrillators. They should contact the Ceramics Department before enrolling to discuss the situation.
