Beginner

A beginner-level, in-person course covering residential interior design principles, visual communication, space planning, materials, lighting and project presentation.

About this course

The course introduces residential interior design through practical workshops, tutor-led demonstrations and independent project work. Participants explore how space, function, layout, colour, texture, materials and lighting influence an interior, while developing floor plans, elevations, sketches, moodboards and concept boards. The course also covers design briefs, research, precedent studies, furniture layouts and presentation techniques. Learners develop a design proposal for an interior space and present the resulting drawings, visuals and research as a mini portfolio, receiving feedback throughout the project.

What you'll learn

  • Apply basic design principles such as balance, rhythm, proportion and harmony to residential interiors.
  • Produce freehand sketches, scaled floor plans, elevations and simple 3D or axonometric drawings.
  • Develop colour palettes and assess materials, finishes and lighting in relation to an interior scheme.
  • Plan domestic spaces by considering zoning, circulation, ergonomics, storage and furniture placement.
  • Develop and present an interior design proposal in response to a brief or chosen space.
