About this course

The course examines Romantic piano repertoire through its technical and stylistic demands. Sessions address ergonomic technique, tone production, dynamic control, pedalling, coordination, music theory and musicianship, alongside approaches to performance practice and memorisation. Classes use a workshop and masterclass format. Participants perform on a grand piano for the group and receive detailed tutor feedback, while peers contribute constructive critiques. Learners who are not performing work on smaller technical matters with the tutor.

What you'll learn

  • Apply principles of healthy piano technique to support freer playing.
  • Interpret Romantic repertoire with greater awareness of relevant performance-practice issues.
  • Use pedalling techniques, including appropriate Una Corda application.
  • Control tone production and dynamics more effectively.
  • Explain relevant theoretical aspects of the repertoire.
  • Develop memorisation skills for piano performance.

Is this course right for you?

The class involves performing to a small group, receiving feedback and taking part in constructive peer critique.

  • A minimum Grade 5 standard is required for entry.
  • Three to six participants perform to the group each week.
  • Regular practice between classes is essential for progress.
