About this course

The course explores how bias grain affects fit, measurements, sizing and fabric behaviour. Participants draft or adapt a skirt pattern, then cut, sew and finish a bias-cut garment in their chosen style. Sessions combine demonstrations, discussion and one-to-one instruction. Pattern terminology, seam detailing and bias-related fashion styles are also covered, alongside troubleshooting issues such as levelling a garment.

What you'll learn

  • Explain how bias grain affects a garment
  • Apply body measurements and sizing information to a skirt pattern
  • Create or adapt a pattern for bias cutting
  • Cut, sew and finish a bias-cut garment
  • Troubleshoot issues that arise when working with the bias

Is this course right for you?

This improver-level course is intended for learners with some pattern-making or clothes-making experience rather than complete beginners to sewing. Participants should be able to follow written or verbal instructions, take measurements and carry out simple calculations.

  • Some pattern-making or clothes-making experience is identified as suitable preparation
  • Tasks completed at home may help with progression during the course

Before you go

  • Participants need to bring their own fabric for cutting by the second session; the tutor will advise on suitable fabric during the first session
  • All equipment is provided by the college
  • A notebook or sketchbook may be useful for notes and sample work
  • An envelope or sleeve is needed to store the pattern
