Introduction to Bookbinding

About this course

The course introduces bookbinding through a progression of projects, from single-section pamphlets to multi-section books with soft or hard covers. Participants practise folding, sewing and gluing, explore Japanese-style binding, and learn how grain direction affects their work. Teaching combines demonstrations, practical sessions, observation, questions and personalised feedback. Learners also develop a Personal Learning Plan and a portfolio of coursework while building familiarity with common bookbinding tools and different materials, styles and formats.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners aged 19 or over who are developing beginner-level bookbinding skills through practical sessions, questions, observations and individual targets. Intermediate and advanced bookbinders may also use the class as a workshop, with aims agreed with the tutor.
