About this course
Participants develop an idea for a sculpture, test it through small clay maquettes and then progress to carving a piece in wood or stone. The course introduces the characteristics of both materials, tool techniques and basic carving principles as the work develops. Teaching combines demonstrations, practical activities, group discussion and individual tuition. The course also considers historical and contemporary sculptors. Learners with more experience can refine their designs and try more experimental techniques.

Before you go
- A piece of wood or stone may be selected from the provider's stock with tutor advice; its cost is included in the course fee.
- Carving tools and required personal protective equipment are provided.
- Participants should bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen. A camera may also be useful for recording work in progress.
- Sturdy closed-toe shoes are required; old work clothes or overalls are strongly recommended.
