Introduction to Digital Photography

About this course

The course introduces learners to DSLR controls and the relationship between aperture, ISO, exposure, shutter speed, focus and light. It explores composition through lines, patterns and landscape subjects, alongside approaches to setting up portraits and capturing movement. Teaching combines step-by-step tutor guidance, real-world examples, individual tasks, group discussion and verbal feedback. Learners also review photographs, transfer them to a computer, and practise resizing and cropping images.

What you'll learn

• Identify and adjust camera controls, including aperture, ISO, exposure and shutter speed
• Apply focusing, composition and lighting principles when making photographs
• Use shutter speed to capture and freeze movement
• Compose landscape and portrait photographs using appropriate camera settings
• Transfer, review, resize and crop digital photographs on a computer

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for beginners and does not require previous photography experience. Learners take part in individual tasks and group discussions, with computer skills described as an advantage. Level 1 literacy and numeracy are recommended.
