About this course

Participants learn to prepare metal surfaces for engraving and use hand engraving tools through a range of techniques. The course covers sharpening tools, drawing and scribing basic shapes and simple lettering, with examples supporting the demonstrations. Teaching combines group demonstrations, group discussion and individual guidance, with handouts provided alongside demonstrations. The work is structured to be completed during class.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate and more advanced jewellery students who want to develop hand engraving as an additional technique. Participation includes group demonstrations and discussion, alongside individual work with one-to-one help. The course is structured so that the work is completed during class.

Before you go

  • Basic tools, equipment and some materials are provided, including base metals and studio consumables.
  • Participants wishing to work in silver or on a large scale need to provide their own metal; the tutor can advise on this.
  • Sensible footwear is required in the studio. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted.
