About this course

The course develops reading and writing at Entry Level 1 alongside speaking and listening at Entry Level 2. Learning combines pair, small-group and individual activities, including audio work, role play, reading aloud, writing exercises, quizzes, word searches and games. Computers, YouTube and an interactive whiteboard are also used. Individual discussions with the tutor review progress, while personal learning plans set individual targets. Assessment is through City & Guilds exams for the unit studied, with successful learners receiving a certificate for that unit.

Is this course right for you?

The course is aimed at learners whose English is assessed below Entry Level 1, with an initial assessment used to determine their current level. The description also refers to learners who understand and speak English at pre-intermediate level or have passed Speaking and Listening Entry Level 1. Participation includes pair, small-group and individual work, as well as one-to-one progress discussions.

• Regular attendance and punctuality are expected, with a stated minimum attendance level of 90%.
• Learners should allow at least four hours each week for independent study and homework.
• An initial assessment determines whether the course is suitable for the learner’s current level.
