About this course

This ESOL course develops core communication and literacy skills through listening exercises, reading aloud, writing tasks, role play, quizzes, word searches and other classroom activities. Learners use audio, computers, YouTube and an interactive whiteboard, working individually, in pairs and in small groups, with opportunities for one-to-one discussions about their progress. An individual learning plan sets personal targets. Progress is assessed through City & Guilds unit exams at the end of each term, which are internally assessed and may lead to a certificate if passed.

What you'll learn

  • Extract relevant information from short texts on familiar topics
  • Distinguish upper- and lower-case letters accurately
  • Recognise words in written texts
  • Identify the purpose of short texts on familiar topics

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for ESOL learners at Entry 1 or Entry 2 whose literacy is less developed than their speaking ability. An initial assessment determines the appropriate English level, with assessed speaking and listening expected to be emerging or consolidating. Participation includes individual work, pair and small-group activities, one-to-one progress discussions and independent study.

  • An initial assessment is used to determine the appropriate level.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are expected for progress.
  • Independent study and homework form part of the course.

Before you go

  • Bring a pen, lined paper and a file for keeping course work.
  • Learners may need to buy a course book.
