About this course

The course develops early English literacy through activities including listening tasks, role play, reading aloud, writing practice, quizzes and word games. Learners work individually, in pairs and in small groups, with opportunities for one-to-one discussions about their progress. Computers, audio, online video and an interactive whiteboard are used alongside classroom teaching. Each learner has an individual plan with personal targets. Assessment includes City & Guilds examinations for the unit studied, which are internally assessed and can lead to a certificate if passed.

What you'll learn

  • Apply full stops correctly in short written work
  • Use capital letters appropriately
  • Spell words accurately
  • Complete short forms with personal information

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for ESOL learners at Entry 1 or Entry 2 whose literacy is less developed than their speaking. An initial assessment establishes whether the course is suitable. The Beginner (A1) label indicates an early stage of language learning. Learners should expect a mixture of individual work, pair and small-group activities, tutor discussions and independent study.

  • An initial English assessment is used to determine the appropriate level.
  • The course is aimed at learners whose literacy level is below their speaking level.
  • Participation includes pair and small-group work as well as individual tasks.
  • Independent study and homework form part of the course.

Before you go

  • Learners should bring a pen, lined paper and a file for their work.
  • A course book may also need to be purchased.
