About this course

The course introduces graphic design through its key visual elements, including layout, grids, hierarchy, typography, colour, shape and pattern. Participants explore how designs convey information, investigate major movements and styles, and develop responses to a brief from research through to a finished design. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, and discussion. The course focuses on physical, analogue approaches, including drawing, rather than teaching computer software, and considers applications across print and digital media.

What you'll learn

  • Apply typography, layout, colour, shape, pattern and imagery to communicate basic information.
  • Research, develop and complete simple graphic designs in response to a brief.
  • Explain key graphic design movements, styles and applications.

Is this course right for you?

  • The course includes reflection on learners’ own work and progress.
