About this course
The course explores how comics and graphic novels communicate stories through sequencing, panels, page layouts, captions, direct speech and sound effects. Learners research and develop a short comic or graphic novel in response to a brief, using drawing, painting, mixed media and basic Adobe Creative Cloud software. Sessions combine presentations, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, and discussion. The course also considers key movements, styles and applications across print and digital media, with tutor and peer feedback used to review work.

- Construct a short comic or graphic novel using sequential images, panels, page layouts, captions, dialogue and sound effects.
- Develop and realise a short graphic-novel project in response to a brief.
- Apply drawing, painting, mixed-media and basic Adobe Creative Cloud techniques to graphic-novel work.
- Discuss key movements, styles and applications within comics and graphic novels.
- Use tutor and peer feedback to review and refine work.
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for beginners developing an understanding of graphic-novel practice. Participation includes practical work, individual and group tutoring, discussions and reflection on personal work. English-language competency is required to follow instructions and demonstrations, take part in discussions and understand written information.
- Additional or extension activities may be set to complete outside class hours.
- The course includes both individual guidance and group discussion.
- Learners should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, including health and safety information.
Before you go
- Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
- Learners are advised to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook for recording ideas.
- An A3 folder and/or USB drive is advised for transporting work.
- Any additional materials required will be discussed during the course.
