About this course

The course develops jazz piano skills through work on harmony, improvisation and rhythm. Participants practise improvising over simple chord sequences, shaping solos with characteristic jazz ideas, and coordinating left- and right-hand patterns in jazz and Latin styles. Teaching combines verbal explanation, handouts, videos, musical examples, demonstrations and individual participation. Classes also include listening to the tutor and other learners, alongside singing and clapping exercises.

What you'll learn

  • Improvise over simple jazz chord sequences using a range of methods
  • Apply typical jazz rhythmic, melodic and harmonic ideas when playing a solo
  • Distinguish between blues, swing and Latin jazz styles
  • Coordinate left- and right-hand patterns through jazz and Latin exercises
