Introduction to jewellery making

About this course

The course introduces jewellery metalworking through projects such as making a ring and developing an individual piece. Participants work with sheet metal and wire, using techniques including cutting, forming, texturing, soldering, annealing, filing, sanding and finishing, including roll printing. Teaching combines demonstrations for the group and individuals with examples of finished jewellery, handouts and technical notes. Workshop health and safety is also covered, with guidance available as participants develop their work.

The course is intended for beginners and for learners with some jewellery metalworking experience who want to refresh fundamental skills. Participation includes following written and spoken instructions, taking part in group discussion, and using simple measurements and calculations.

Before you go

• Basic tools and equipment are provided.
• Basic materials, including copper and brass, are supplied in reasonable quantities, along with paper, pens, chemicals and polishing sundries.
• Learners wishing to work in silver or on a large scale need to provide their own metal.
• Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted.
• Learners who already have an apron and safety glasses are advised to bring them.
