About this course

The course introduces several methods for joining timber, combining demonstrations with opportunities to practise each technique. Participants explore biscuit jointing for tabletops, edge joints and mitres, including alignment and the use of domino cutters. They also examine mortise-and-tenon construction using hand tools and machinery, and make mitred frames with different cutting and clamping methods. The course concludes with marking, hand-cutting and fitting through dovetails, alongside an introduction to router-cut dovetailing and other forms used in furniture making.

What you'll learn

  • Align and fit biscuits to create tabletop, edge and mitre joints
  • Make mortise-and-tenon joints using hand tools and machinery
  • Cut and assemble mitred frames using suitable cutting and clamping methods
  • Mark out, hand-cut and fit through dovetail joints
  • Distinguish between biscuit and domino joints and identify alternative dovetail methods

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled Beginner and introduces fundamental joint-making techniques. However, the provider suggests that people completely new to woodwork may prefer to begin with an introductory hand-tools or power-tools course, so this course may suit learners with some basic workshop familiarity.

  • Covers both hand-tool and machinery-based approaches
  • Includes demonstrations of alternative methods for several joints
  • Useful for learners looking to develop skills for furniture, frames or storage projects
