Introduction to laser cutting for designers

About this course

Participants explore the laser-cutting process from preparing digital design files through to operating the machine, engraving, selecting materials and assembling finished pieces. The course focuses on safe and effective equipment use and applying digital fabrication methods to small design projects. Teaching combines demonstrations, step-by-step guidance, guided exercises and individual project work. Practical assessment takes place throughout the course, with feedback as participants produce projects that demonstrate file preparation, machine operation and finished fabrication.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for adults new to laser cutting, design software or fabrication, including learners returning to study. It combines tutor-led demonstrations and guided exercises with individual project work, so participants can apply each stage of the process during class.

• No previous experience in design software or fabrication is required.
• Learners with basic digital or design skills can use the course to extend them.
• There is no required work outside class.

Before you go

• No specialist equipment needs to be brought; the college provides access to laser-cutting machines and essential tools.
• Basic materials for initial projects are usually included, and materials do not need to be purchased before the first session.
• Additional materials for advanced or personal projects may be purchased optionally; the tutor can advise on suitable materials, suppliers and approximate costs.
• A notebook may be brought for taking notes.
