Introduction to Machine Shop: Chopping Board (incl. Level 1 H&S induction)

About this course

The session begins with a Level 1 health and safety induction for the machine shop, introducing safe working practices and the operation of workshop machinery. Participants then consider different hardwood types and uses before designing and making their own chopping board. Tutor guidance is provided throughout the project, from planning the design to shaping and finishing the board.

What you'll learn

• Operate a bandsaw, chopsaw, pillar drill, disc sander and bobbin sander safely
• Apply basic knowledge of hardwood types and their uses
• Design a chopping board for production in the workshop
• Use machine-shop processes to make a wooden chopping board

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled Beginner and is intended as an introduction to machine-shop woodworking. Participants work on an individual chopping-board project with guidance from a tutor, alongside the workshop’s Level 1 safety induction.

Before you go

• Participants select hardwood from the onsite timber store.
• Workshop machinery, including a bandsaw, chopsaw, pillar drill, disc sander and bobbin sander, is used during the session.
• The course includes the workshop Level 1 induction, enabling participants to book a workbench for future use.
• Public Liability Insurance is required when making a future bench booking.
