Introduction to Mouldmaking and Slipcasting

About this course

Participants will make a one-part or multi-part plaster mould and use it to produce slip-cast forms. The course considers functional and sculptural applications, including decorative approaches for batch production and relevant industrial ceramic terminology. Teaching combines demonstrations with set tasks, group discussion and one-to-one guidance. Participants can discuss their own aims and receive feedback while developing their mouldmaking and slipcasting techniques.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and for learners with some ceramics experience who want to explore mouldmaking and slipcasting. Participation includes practical tasks, group discussion and individual guidance, with physical activity involved in mixing plaster and filling and emptying moulds.

• Some tasks require physical activity, including mixing plaster and handling filled moulds.
• Learners who require assistance with physical tasks should discuss this with the tutor.

Before you go

• Wear suitable clothing and bring an apron, as working with plaster can be messy.
• Bring an FFP3 respirator or mask.
• Bring three to four plastic containers for making the mould.
• Finished pieces can be collected later after bisque firing.
