About this course

Participants prepare opera scenes through music and stage rehearsals, working on assigned repertoire and casting with at least one role in a scene. The course combines singing and acting, including characterisation, movement and ensemble performance, with opportunities to work in different languages and adapt performance techniques for camera recording. Learning is based on active rehearsal, observation of other singers and regular feedback from the teaching team. Each term concludes with a staged or semi-staged public performance, providing a context for applying the work developed in class.

What you'll learn

  • Develop characterisation and movement for operatic performance
  • Perform as part of a small ensemble or company
  • Adapt live performance techniques for camera or video recording
  • Evaluate performance strengths and identify areas for improvement
  • Perform operatic material in a range of languages

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for singers at an intermediate level who have a secure classical vocal technique and continue to receive regular singing tuition. Participation involves independent music preparation, active rehearsal, ensemble work and performing in an opera scene. Entry is through an application and audition.

  • A sound classical vocal technique is expected
  • Regular singing tuition outside the course is assumed
  • Applicants need to be willing to learn music independently
  • Some knowledge of, or enthusiasm for, Italian, French or German may be useful

Before you go

  • Applicants must prepare two arias of their choice from memory for the audition and bring a copy of the music for the accompanist.
  • Two copies of the chosen aria are needed for the first sessions.
  • Copies of allocated music are provided by the tutors, although learners may purchase their own copies.
  • Movement may form part of rehearsals. Learners with mobility concerns can discuss suitable variations with the course leader.
