About this course

The course introduces baton and non-baton conducting, beat patterns, cues, dynamics and fermatas, alongside the terminology and physical techniques used in orchestral work. Lectures and practical activities examine how to read and prepare scores, identify structure and instrumentation, and develop interpretations of repertoire. Participants also explore rehearsal planning and verbal communication with ensembles, then apply these approaches when conducting short orchestral excerpts. Observing other conductors work is encouraged, giving learners opportunities to consider different techniques and approaches to musical interpretation.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for musicians with intermediate to advanced proficiency on an orchestral instrument or voice, together with foundational music theory and existing musical literacy. It is not a beginner musicianship course. Familiarity with orchestral repertoire is helpful, while basic piano proficiency is beneficial but not required. Participation includes conducting work, physical movement and observing other conductors.
