Introduction to Photopolymer

About this course

Participants explore historical and contemporary photopolymer printmaking while preparing artwork for exposure onto a plate. The course covers both digital image preparation and hand-drawn marks made with opaque drawing materials on transparent material. Demonstrations, examples and handouts introduce exposure methods, plate development in water, inking and printing onto paper with an etching press. Learners complete practical exercises individually and in small groups, with tutor guidance and group discussion.

What you'll learn

• Create hand-drawn artwork using opaque drawing materials on transparent material
• Expose and develop a photopolymer plate with a UV exposure unit
• Ink a plate and produce photopolymer prints on paper using an etching press

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to learners at all levels and has an introductory focus. It involves individual practical exercises, work in small groups, demonstrations, discussions and following verbal and written instructions, including health and safety information, in English.

• English-language competency is needed to follow demonstrations, handouts and safety information
• Learners are encouraged to make short notes and reflect on their own work

Before you go

• Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course
• Up to three A5 photopolymer prints can be made; additional plates are available to purchase
• Images or sketches may be brought as inspiration
• Closed footwear is required, and open-toed footwear is not permitted
• Recommended personal protective equipment is provided for relevant activities
