Introduction to printmaking

About this course

Participants are introduced to several printmaking processes, including monotype, drypoint, collagraph, linocut and etching. They develop simple designs, prepare plates, explore mark-making, texture and composition, and produce one-off prints and small editions from their own ideas. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, guided exercises and practical studio work using etching equipment. Participants also develop independent projects, with feedback and one-to-one guidance from the tutor. Group discussions and sharing work provide opportunities to reflect on the processes used.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for adults aged 19 and over with little or no printmaking experience. It suits learners who are beginning or returning to study and prefer step-by-step guidance alongside independent project work. Participants take part in group discussions and share work at the end of the course.

• No previous printmaking experience is required
• There is no formal assessment
• No work is required outside class

Before you go

• Basic materials are provided at the start, including an A5 metal plate.
• The studio provides etching presses, specialist tools and personal protective equipment where required.
• Additional plates, papers or tools may be purchased from the college at cost price as projects develop.
• Some processes use solvents, with safety equipment provided.
