Introduction to prop making for film, TV, theatre and display

About this course

Participants explore sculpting in clay and Sculpey, carving polystyrene and Styrofoam, mould making, casting, life casting and fabrication. The course also covers paint effects, finishes and contextual research related to prop making for film, television, theatre and display. Teaching combines demonstrations with short practical tasks, one-to-one guidance and group discussions. Examples from practising prop makers are used to support learning, while independent research and investigation outside class are encouraged but not compulsory.

What you'll learn

• Sculpt objects using clay or Sculpey.
• Carve a basic sculpt in polystyrene or Styrofoam.
• Make a one-piece mould and cast in Jesmonite.
• Produce at least one life cast and explain the concept behind the process.
• Manipulate materials for fabrication and apply paint effects and finishes.
• Identify areas of the prop-making industry relevant to a specific area of expertise.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and does not require previous experience, although learners with some experience are also welcome. Participation includes practical tasks, individual guidance and group discussions, with independent investigation encouraged outside class but not compulsory.

• No previous experience is necessary.
• Learners with some existing experience are welcome.
• Independent research outside class is encouraged, but not required.

Before you go

• Basic materials are supplied.
• Bring images and/or objects to support some tasks.
• Bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen for sketching and note-taking.
• A camera or smartphone is useful for documenting work in progress.
• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. Old clothes or overalls are recommended because some materials may stain or damage fabric.
• Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn where required.
