Introduction to Renaissance Poetry

An introductory literature session exploring Renaissance poetry through tutor presentations, short extracts and group discussion.
About this course
The session introduces Renaissance poetry through selected works by writers including William Shakespeare, Philip Sidney and Mary Wroth. Discussion will consider how poems present love, desire, gender, race and other categories of difference, alongside the period’s literary culture, themes, forms and voices. Teaching combines brief slide presentations, readings of short poem extracts and class discussion. Learners will examine the material collectively rather than completing a formal programme of independent study.
