Introduction to sculpture

About this course

Participants are introduced to additive and subtractive sculpture through work with clay, papier mâché, wood, plaster and metal. Activities include shaping, joining, carving and casting from self-made moulds, alongside an introduction to sculpture terminology, workshop tools and relevant art history. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations for the group with practical activities and individual feedback. Learners develop ideas through making while exploring a range of sculptural processes and materials.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners and is also suitable for learners with some previous experience or those returning to making who want to refresh their skills. Participation combines practical making with whole-group demonstrations and individual guidance.

Before you go

• Essential materials and equipment are provided.
• Bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen for sketches and notes.
• A camera can be used to photograph work in progress.
• Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes. Old clothes or overalls are recommended because some materials may mark or damage fabrics.
• Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn when required.
