Introduction to Sewing & Clothesmaking

About this course

The course introduces machine sewing through machine setup, bobbin winding, threading, basic stitches and troubleshooting stitch problems. Participants practise straight and zig-zag stitching, backstitching, consistent seams, seam finishes and one method of zipper insertion. It also covers essential pattern language, including seam allowance, darts, notches, grain line, bias and selvedge. Participants explore fabric types and suitability, then follow a pattern to construct one or two simple projects such as a tote bag, cushion cover, zipper pouch or half-scale skirt. Progress is reviewed through Personal Learning Plans, written practice notes and discussions with the tutor.

The course is intended for beginners developing foundational machine-sewing and clothesmaking skills. Regular attendance is considered essential, with progress supported through practice, written notes and discussions. Experienced sewers or clothes makers are advised to consider an Intermediate to Advanced course instead.
