Introduction to stone setting: flush and gypsy setting

About this course

The course introduces flush setting, where round faceted stones are seated level with a metal surface. Learners practise on flat and curved samples while considering stone size, metal thickness, hardness and design suitability. They make, adapt and maintain a setting tool, and use a Vernier gauge to measure stones accurately. Demonstrations, photographic examples, handouts and group discussion support the practical work, with extension exercises introducing tube setting.

Is this course right for you?

This improver-level course is intended for learners who are reasonably confident with basic jewellery making, including cutting, filing and joining metal. Previous stone-setting experience is not required. Participants should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, interpret demonstrations and safety information, take part in group discussion, and carry out simple measurements and calculations.

Before you go

• Most basic jewellery-making tools and equipment are provided.
• Basic materials, including copper and brass, chemicals, sundries and cubic zirconia practice stones, are provided in reasonable quantities.
• Saw blades, sandpaper and burrs are provided.
• Learners should bring an apron and safety glasses.
• Sensible footwear is required: sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted.
