Introduction to stone setting: raised grain setting

About this course

The course introduces raised grain setting for small faceted stones. Learners examine specialist tools, adapt and sharpen them, then practise raising metal beads on flat copper before progressing towards a row of stones in a ring. The setting process covers preparing, measuring, marking and aligning metal, followed by placing stones using raised grains or beads. Teaching combines demonstrations for the group and individual guidance, with group discussion and feedback included.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with experience of jewellery-making and an improver level of ability. Participants should already be able to cut, pierce, drill and file metal, and have confidence with basic rub-over bezel and flush or gypsy setting. Teaching combines practical demonstrations, individual guidance and group discussion.

Before you go

• Most basic jewellery-making tools and equipment are provided.
• Basic quantities of base metals such as copper and brass, chemicals and sundries are supplied.
• Saw blades, sandpaper, burrs and cubic zirconia gemstones for practice are provided.
• Learners wishing to progress to using silver will be advised what to purchase and in what quantity.
