Introduction to the Italian Renaissance

About this course

The course explores Italian art and visual culture from 1400 to 1600 through thematic lectures, slide presentations, activities and group discussion. Case studies range from works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian to lesser-known objects connected with everyday life and cultural practices. Topics include artistic workshops and guilds, linear perspective, classical antiquity, religious and mythological iconography, portraiture, women’s representation, identity and architectural innovation. Learners will consider how artworks were made and how their meanings were shaped by cultural, religious and political circumstances.
