About this course

The course traces political and cultural developments in Ireland from the aftermath of Kildare through the Battle of Kinsale, the Plantation of Ulster, the Ulster Rebellion and Cromwell’s rule, concluding with events surrounding the Treaty of Limerick and the Flight of the Earls. Teaching is delivered through lectures, using Ireland’s relationships with Britain, continental Europe and America to examine how a distinct sense of Irish identity developed. Optional pre- and post-lecture reading and activities are available.
