What Advanced (C1+) Italian means

At C1+ Italian, learners can express complex ideas precisely, understand nuance and adapt their language to different contexts.

  • Qualify an argument

Per quanto l’argomentazione sia nel complesso convincente, trascura diverse conseguenze impreviste.

While the argument is broadly convincing, it overlooks several unintended consequences.

  • Convey nuance

Non contesto la proposta in sé, bensì la fretta con cui viene attuata.

I do not oppose the proposal itself; what I question is the rushed way it is being implemented.

  • Adapt your register

La prego di riconsiderare la decisione alla luce delle ulteriori informazioni allegate.

Please reconsider the decision in light of the additional information attached.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

Each term centres on an Italian literary work and its author, using reading, discussion and writing to examine literary styles, sentence construction and idiomatic language. The course also revisits advanced grammar, including the subjunctive and conditional moods, reported speech, the past historic and other past tenses. Teaching includes spoken interaction, pair and group activities, role plays, games, presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. Essays may be set during the course, and homework is recommended for consolidating learning.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse literary styles, sentence structures and idiomatic language in Italian texts
  • Discuss an Italian literary work and its author in Italian
  • Use the subjunctive and conditional moods in appropriate contexts
  • Recognise and apply reported speech and a range of past-tense forms
  • Develop written responses to literary material
