What Beginner (A1) Italian means

At A1 Italian, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

    Mi chiamo Anna. Abito a Londra.

    My name is Anna. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    Vorrei un caffè, per favore.

    I would like a coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    Scusi, dov’è la stazione?

    Excuse me, where is the station?

About this course

The course develops Italian for everyday situations, using topics such as hotels, directions, describing places and holidays. Lessons cover regular and irregular present-tense verbs, prepositions, questions, adjectives and gender agreement. Teaching centres on spoken communication, with pair and group work, role plays and games. Presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources support the lessons, while earlier topics are revisited alongside new material. The course follows Units 5, 6 and 7 of Nuovo Espresso Plus 1.
