What Elementary (A2) Italian means

At A2 Italian, learners can handle simple routine exchanges and describe familiar aspects of everyday life.

  • Describe your routine

Di solito vado al lavoro in autobus e torno a casa alle sei.

I usually go to work by bus and return home at six.

  • Make a simple plan

Vuoi andare al cinema sabato pomeriggio?

Would you like to go to the cinema on Saturday afternoon?

  • Talk about the recent past

Ieri ho cenato con degli amici e poi abbiamo fatto una passeggiata.

Yesterday I had dinner with friends and then we went for a walk.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops Italian for conversations about traditions, festivals, family life, celebrations and holiday plans. Learners practise describing people and relationships, discussing past events and using greetings and wishes in relevant situations. Lessons are taught primarily in Italian and combine spoken communication with group work and role-plays. Reading, writing and listening are also covered, alongside grammar including the passato prossimo, possessive adjectives, dates and numbers.

What you'll learn

  • Discuss Italian traditions, festivals, family celebrations and customs
  • Describe past events using the passato prossimo with regular and irregular verbs
  • Talk about upcoming holidays and other future plans
  • Describe appearance, personality and family relationships
  • Use possessive adjectives, including with family members
  • Use numbers from 101 to 10,000 and expressions including prima di, dopo and mai with the past tense

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who have already studied some Italian, with the provider recommending Level 5 or a course of at least 60 class hours. The Elementary (A2) label suggests developing beyond the fundamentals, while a placement test can help confirm the appropriate level.

  • Previous Italian study is recommended
  • Lessons involve spoken communication, group work and role-plays
  • There are no formal tests; progression considers class participation and self-study
