Italian Neo-Realism

About this course

The course traces Italian Neorealism from its early examples and wartime films through its development in the 1950s, including work by Visconti, Rossellini and De Sica. It considers how political, social and cultural circumstances shaped the films, alongside the movement’s later influence and common misconceptions. Teaching combines tutor-led study, screenings of short film extracts, and discussions in small and large groups. Several films are examined in detail, while others are placed within the movement’s wider history.
