What Beginner (A1) Japanese means

At A1 Japanese, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

    アンナです。ロンドンに住んでいます。

I am Anna. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    コーヒーを一杯お願いします。

    One coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    すみません、駅はどこですか。

Excuse me, where is the station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops spoken Japanese for situations travellers may encounter, including introductions, asking for help, ordering food and drinks, shopping, using transport hubs and speaking at a chemist. It also covers dietary preferences and cultural advice about food and drink. Teaching combines role plays, group activities and games with handouts, audio-visual materials and presentations, with a focus on listening and spoken communication. Homework is recommended to reinforce the work covered in class.
