What Upper Intermediate (B2) Japanese means
At B2 Japanese, learners can communicate fluently on concrete and abstract topics, develop arguments and respond in detail.
Support a viewpoint
この施策には初期費用がかかりますが、長期的には地域全体の利益につながるでしょう。
Although the measure would have an initial cost, it would benefit the whole community in the long term.
Discuss an abstract issue
技術はコミュニケーションを容易にする一方で、プライバシーに関する懸念も生じます。
Technology makes communication easier, but it also creates concerns about privacy.
Negotiate a solution
締め切りを一週間延ばせば、質を落とさずに予算を守れます。
If we extend the deadline by a week, we can keep the budget without reducing quality.
These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.
About this course
The course develops more natural, everyday Japanese through a varied set of classroom activities. Learners work on vocabulary, review grammar, complete listening tasks and practise speaking in pairs or groups, with opportunities for discussion and feedback. Lessons draw on authentic material including news reports, articles, television advertisements, YouTube videos and social media content rather than following a single textbook. The teacher and students decide some of the content together, allowing the programme to reflect the group’s learning goals and interests.
What you'll learn
- Expand Japanese vocabulary used in everyday contexts
- Review and apply grammar at approximately JLPT N3 level
- Practise understanding Japanese through listening tasks using authentic media
- Use Japanese in pair and group discussions
- Recognise language and cultural content found in contemporary Japanese media
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for learners at upper-intermediate level or above who have studied Japanese for some time. The source identifies approximately JLPT N3 grammar and vocabulary as suitable preparation, as well as completion of all Japanese course levels at IH London. Participation includes pair work, group speaking and discussion.
- Uses authentic media rather than a single coursebook.
- Some lesson content is shaped by the group’s interests and learning goals.
