Japanese Woodcut: Beginner

About this course

The course introduces Japanese woodcut through presentations on Ukiyo-e, Washi paper and contemporary Mokuhanga artists, alongside demonstrations and supplementary films. Participants develop a three-colour image from their own drawing, prepare colour separations, measure and mark woodblocks, and use Japanese carving tools and the traditional kento registration system. Studio work combines independent practice with individual tutor guidance, discussions and critiques. The printing process uses watercolour pigments and nori, with attention to producing nuanced prints on handmade Washi paper.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners and for learners refreshing Japanese woodcut skills. Previous knowledge of relief printing, such as woodcut or linocut, may be useful but is not essential. Participation includes independent studio work, one-to-one guidance, discussions and critiques.

• The course content builds progressively, so attending the full course is advisable.
• Learners develop an image from their own drawing, images or ideas.
• The class includes both individual practice and group discussions or critiques.

Before you go

• Participants should bring images or ideas and, ideally, a sketchbook for developing the initial woodcut.
• Woodblocks, Japanese tools, paper, watercolours and other printing materials are provided.
• An apron is not required.
• Participants may bring their own woodcutting tools if they wish.
