Japanese woodcut printmaking

About this course

Participants explore the traditional Japanese woodcut process from initial drawings through to multi-colour print editions. Teaching combines demonstrations, practical application, one-to-one guidance and group discussion. The course covers colour separation, safe woodblock cutting, the kento registration system and hand printing with water-based pigments, rice paste and a baren. It also introduces the history and artistic range of the technique, along with Japanese papermaking and different paper types.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for complete beginners, while previous printmaking experience may be advantageous but is not essential. Participation includes demonstrations, practical work, individual discussion and group discussion. Learners should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, including health and safety guidance.
