Japanese: writing for beginners part 1

About this course

The course examines the development of Japanese writing and introduces 46 hiragana and katakana characters. Learners work with Japanese word order and writing conventions, including double consonants, modifying syllables, long vowels and the representation of foreign words in katakana. Teaching uses interaction, pair and group activities, speaking and listening practice, pictures, realia, authentic materials and audio-visual resources where appropriate. The course also includes written sentence work and applying katakana to names and other foreign words.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for near-beginner learners rather than those starting Japanese from scratch. Participants should already know basic Japanese grammar and be able to read hiragana and katakana. The teaching includes oral classroom activities, interaction with other learners, pair and group work, and homework when required.
