About this course

The course uses jazz standards in styles including swing, Latin, blues, modal, funk and ballad as a framework for developing guitar technique and musical understanding. Learners work on melody phrasing, expression, chord voicings, voice-leading, scales, arpeggios and chord-melody approaches, while applying theory through improvisation and comping exercises. Classes also cover transcription and ear-to-instrument work. Participants play in a jazz guitar ensemble, taking roles such as melody player, accompanist or soloist, and work towards performing a set of tunes. Repertoire and some content can be adapted to accommodate learner requests.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for more experienced jazz guitarists developing beyond fundamental techniques. It involves ensemble playing alongside individual preparation between classes. At least two years of playing in the jazz guitar idiom is stated, with knowledge of specified scales and basic chord symbols. Music notation is advantageous, while TAB, chord charts and recordings can support study.

• At least two years of jazz guitar experience is required.
• Learners are expected to practise regularly and prepare repertoire between classes.
• Music notation is useful but not essential if learners can work from TAB, chord progressions and recordings.

Before you go

• Bring a guitar and lead to lessons.
• Amps are provided when needed.
• Bring manuscript paper, a notebook and writing materials.
