About this course

The course develops jazz piano technique through a combination of theory, listening and regular playing. Students work on jazz standards in styles including swing, Latin, blues, modal, funk and ballad, while exploring ninth chords, rootless and two-handed voicings, quartal harmony, block chords, pentatonic patterns, turnarounds and tritone substitution. Class activities include playing tunes with other participants, working through rhythmic, technical and chordal exercises, and ear training focused on recognising modes. Improvisation covers right-hand lines with left-hand accompaniment, while ensemble work includes accompanying with bass lines and chords. The term concludes with a trio performance involving bass and drums.

  • Play the melodies of several standard jazz tunes
  • Improvise with the right hand while providing left-hand accompaniment
